Near-Infrared Spectra of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies.
Near-infrared spectra with a resolution of lambda&solm0;Deltalambda approximately 1100 in the rest-wavelength range of 1.8-2.2 µm have been obtained for a complete sample of 33 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Of the 33 objects observed, two show evidence of a central active galactic nucleus (AGN) through either a broad Paschen-alpha line or emission in the 1.963 µm fine structure of [...
متن کاملImaging of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies in the Near-UV
We present the first ground-based U (λcentral =3410Å, ∆λ=320Å) images of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs). Two samples were observed: (1) “warm” ULIGs with mid-infrared colors characteristic of active galactic nuclei (f25μm/f60μm >0.2), which are believed to represent a critical transition phase between cooler ULIGs and optically selected QSOs according to a previously proposed evolution...
متن کاملThe Near-infrared Morphology of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
Near-infrared images at 1.25 μm, 1.65 μm, and 2.2 μm have been obtained of nine galaxies from the IRAS Bright Galaxy Sample with infrared luminosities L1R ~ 1012 L 0 • Two of the 2.2 μm images reveal previously undetected double nuclei, increasing the number of close double nuclei known for this sample from two to four. For three of these four sources, the colors of both nuclei are substantiall...
متن کاملVISUAL AND NEAR - INFRARED IMAGING OF ULTRALUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES : THE IRAS 2 Jy SAMPLE
New near-infrared and visual images at 2.2 /¿m and 6550 Â are presented for 46 galaxies having infrared luminosities of LIR>8.5X10 U L0, 60 fim flux densities greater than 1.94 Jy, and declinations greater than -35°. These galaxies make up a significant fraction of a complete, northern hemisphere sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Visual and/or near-infrared imaging data now exist for 5...
متن کاملSpitzer Mid-Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We have observed 14 nearby (z < 0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6—24μm. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.
